Best Exterior Paint Colors for Hawaii Homes in 2026

Color choice for a Hawaii home is different from the mainland. You're working with intense tropical light, lush green surroundings, and a climate that fades colors faster than almost anywhere else. Here's what I've learned after painting hundreds of Oahu homes.

1Why Hawaii Fades Colors Faster

Hawaii's UV index is among the highest in the US. Darker, more saturated colors absorb more UV and fade faster. That deep navy or charcoal that looks stunning on day one can look washed out in 18 months. This is why I always recommend Sherwin-Williams Duration — it has superior fade resistance built in.

2Colors That Work Well in Hawaii

Warm whites and creams (SW Alabaster, SW Antique White) are timeless and reflect heat. Soft sage greens blend beautifully with tropical landscaping. Warm taupes and greiges (SW Accessible Beige, SW Agreeable Gray) are versatile and hold their tone well. Coastal blues and aquas can work but need to be lighter tones to avoid rapid fading.

3Colors to Approach with Caution

Very dark colors — deep charcoals, navy, black — absorb heat and fade fast in Hawaii's sun. They also show salt deposits more visibly in coastal areas. If you love a dark color, use it as an accent (shutters, front door, trim) rather than the main body color.

4HOA and Neighborhood Considerations

Many Oahu neighborhoods and condo associations have approved color palettes. Always check before committing to a color. We can help you find options within your HOA guidelines that still look great.

Pro Tip from Lopaka

Always test your color in a large swatch (at least 12"x12") on the actual wall and observe it at different times of day. Hawaii's light is different from the mainland — colors look different here.
