Cabinet Painting vs. Replacing: What Makes Sense in Hawaii

I get asked about cabinet painting constantly — and for good reason. In Hawaii, new kitchen cabinets can run $15,000–$40,000 or more. A professional cabinet paint job typically costs a fraction of that and, done right, looks just as good. Here's my honest take.

1When Cabinet Painting Makes Sense

If your cabinet boxes are solid and structurally sound, painting is almost always the better value. The doors, drawer fronts, and hardware are what you see — and those can be transformed completely with paint. If the boxes are warped, water-damaged, or falling apart, that's a different conversation.

2What the Process Actually Involves

A proper cabinet paint job is not a weekend DIY project. We remove all doors and drawer fronts, clean everything with a degreaser, sand all surfaces, apply a bonding primer, spray two finish coats, and reinstall. The whole process takes 3–5 days. Rushing any step shows in the final result.

3Why Spraying Beats Brushing

Brush marks on cabinets look amateur. We spray all cabinet doors and drawer fronts for a factory-smooth finish. It takes more setup time but the result is incomparably better. If a painter tells you they'll brush your cabinets and it'll look great — get a second opinion.

4Realistic Expectations

A professional cabinet paint job will look excellent and last 5–10 years with normal care. It's not the same as new cabinets — if you look closely at the edges you'll see it's painted. But from a normal viewing distance, it's a dramatic transformation at a fraction of the cost.

Pro Tip from Lopaka

White and off-white are the most popular cabinet colors in Hawaii — they brighten kitchens and hold up well. If you want color, stick to lighter tones. Dark cabinet colors show every fingerprint and scratch.
