One of the most overlooked decisions in any paint project is the finish. The color gets all the attention, but the sheen level affects durability, cleanability, and how the room actually looks. Here's what I recommend for each room in a Hawaii home.
1Flat / Matte — Ceilings Only
Flat paint hides imperfections beautifully but is nearly impossible to clean without leaving marks. In Hawaii's humidity, it also tends to absorb moisture. I only recommend flat for ceilings, where it looks great and doesn't need to be wiped down.
2Eggshell — Living Rooms and Bedrooms
Eggshell has a very slight sheen that's barely noticeable but makes the paint much more washable than flat. It's the right choice for living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms — areas that see normal traffic but not heavy moisture or grease.
3Satin — Hallways, Kids' Rooms, Family Rooms
Satin has a soft, velvety sheen and is noticeably more durable and washable than eggshell. It's my go-to for high-traffic areas, kids' rooms, and hallways. It holds up well to cleaning and still looks elegant.
4Semi-Gloss — Kitchens, Bathrooms, Trim
Semi-gloss is the right choice anywhere moisture and grease are present. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms — and all trim, doors, and cabinets throughout the house. It's easy to wipe clean and resists moisture well. In Hawaii's humid climate, this matters a lot.
Don't use flat paint in bathrooms or kitchens in Hawaii. The humidity will cause it to absorb moisture, leading to mold and peeling within months. Satin minimum, semi-gloss preferred.
